Steve graduated from the University of Vermont (BA History/Zoology) and participated in a Masters Degree Program in Psychology at Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts. He is a former educator/coach and is involved in the Bedford Kiwanis Club, SML Association and the Smith Mountain Lake Chamber of Commerce.

Steve and his family relocated to Virginia from the Boston area in 1989. Nancy, his wife of twenty-six years taught computer science at Staunton River High School. His daughter, Heather, was an honor student at the University of Virginia and has just finished her first year teaching special needs in the Charlottesville school system. Heather is also an accomplished equestrian.
